Seane Corn began her career in yoga in New York City in the 1980’s. At that time, she was just a teenager waiting tables at a local restaurant. She and the restaurant owner and another waitress decided to go in together and form a yoga studio. They called it Jivamukta. Eventually, her friends went abroad to study yoga more intensively. Seane stayed in NYC and continued in yoga and meditation practice.
Seane Corn had an epiphany! She realized that yoga and the accompanying spiritual and meditative practices had helped her to overcome obsessive-compulsive tendencies and to become accepting of herself. Following her training in NYC, Seane traveled to India to train with yoga instructor, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. She also received spiritual instruction from Ammachi Mona Miller and Barbara Soloman.
This experience helped her to become deeply invested in the spirituality of yoga, and this aspect has always been a very large part of her yoga practice and teaching. Her style is a combination of prayer and flow yoga (Vinyasa yoga). It is a style that is always growing and evolving. Her classes seamlessly combine a very fluid and energetic flow yoga workout with an intense focus on prayerfulness and meditation. She believes that combining these two elements empowers the practitioner and fosters self-awareness and acceptance.
For Seane, Yoga is a Means of Self-Expression & Creative Outlet ~ When meditative awareness is combined with breath, body and mind to become one the perfect conditions exist for complete openness in creativity and spirituality.
In addition to being a well-known yoga instructor, Seane Corn is also an outspoken activist and National Yoga Ambassador. Her areas of interest include helping to raise money and awareness for the support of services for YouthAIDS. Additionally, she is the cofounder of a campaign known as Off the Matt, Into the World. The goal of this campaign is to motivate young people and help them discover ways in which they may work to benefit their own communities and the world community.
One of Seane’s shining accomplishments is the founding of a yoga program in a shelter for former teenaged prostitutes in California. Her focus is on using yoga to help herself and others become self-aware. Seane Corn is also skilled in understanding the system of chakras. She has a very deep comprehension of the ways in which the repression of emotion and energy can cause imbalance and disease in the human body. By combining her knowledge of the chakras with the psychological concepts of Anodea Judith and Caroline Myss (who is also a client) she has been able to merge these concepts into fluidly choreographed flow yoga routines. Using this method, she has helped many people to open up their minds, bodies and channels of energy to attain optimum wellness.
You have probably seen her on the covers of magazines such as Allure, Self and Glamour. She has also appeared on Oprah and several other popular television programs. Among her clients are such famous celebrities as David Duchovny, Sting, Drew Barrymore, Sally Field and her friend, Ashley Judd with whom she also works tirelessly in the cause of AIDS awareness.
Since the early 1990s, she has lived in California. She began studying with some of the best teachers in the US – Rodney Yee, Richard Freeman, and more – at that time. Today, she teaches with Rodney Yee and Richard Freeman at the Yoga Works in Santa Monica CA. Seane Corn also travels frequently to teach workshops and attend and organize spiritual retreats worldwide.
