Bikram Choudhury

Bikram Choudhury is a well known name in the field of ‘yoga.’ He is a founder of the world famous ‘Bikram Yoga technique’, and is an astute and extremely succesful businessman too. He is a student of Bishnu Ghosh, Yogananda Paramahansa’s brother, the author of Autobiography of a Yogi. This lineage is responsible for translating ancient texts of Eastern philosophers for the West.

Bikram Choudhury – Yoga From A Toddler

It is said that Bikram began learning yoga at the age of three. As a teenager Bikram Choudhury won several National ‘Yoga’ championships in his native India. He was named ‘Yogi Raj’ by Swami Sivananda when he was just 14 years old. Yogi Raj translates to King Of Yogi’s.

At the age of 20 , he met with an accident while doing some weightlifting which crippled him badly. Doctors then, declared that he will not be able to walk again but such was the power of Yoga and his will, that he started walking again. Thanks to his Guru, Bishnu Ghosh and the amazing art of Yoga , says Bikram.

Bikram Choudhury’s Yoga Legacy

He went on to open Yoga schools in countries like India and Japan. He opened his first US school in 1972 in San Franscisco. Bikram’s main school is in California and offers 9 week certified teacher training in Bikram Yoga. These classes are availabe with certified teachers in dedicated Bikram schools he has opened throughout the world.

Bikram Choudhury has contributed vastly to the spread and popularity of Yoga in the Western world.
